Book Recommendation Assignment

We've learned there are different purposes which encourage us to read.  While sometimes we read books based on certain topics or written in various genres, many times it is the recommendation of our peers which gets us reading.  For this assignment, choose a book you've read in the last three months which you enjoyed and write a review/recommendation.

Points to Remember:
Summarize the main idea of the story in 2-3 sentences. (Think of the genre, the setting, and beginning of the story line.)
Suggest what type of reader would like the book.
Check your spelling before you post a comment!

Due Dates:
8th Grade - Saturday, October 4th by 3 p.m.
7th Grade - Sunday, October 5th by 3 p.m.

The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier was a fantastic realistic fiction story. Set in a catholic high school, one boy must choose whether or not to join a chocolate fundraising sale. His decision changes the whole atmosphere of the school. I think anyone who is interested in high school antics, challenging authority, secret organizations, or broadening their vocabulary would enjoy reading this book.

Wake by Lisa McMann was a very interesting book. This book is about a teenage girl named Janie who has a special power where she can see other peoples dreams while she is sleeping. When she was about 8 years old she had discovered this power and she thought is was really cool. As Janie got older she realized that it wasn’t so much fun anymore. As Janie watches other peoples dreams, she starts to see things she shouldn’t be seeing and never thought she would ever see. It is very hard to get out of these scary and terrible dreams. I recommend this book to anyone who likes fiction, mystery, or fantasy.

Pretty Little Liars was a really good book. This book was about 5 then 4 girls(i don't want to give it away!) They all are best friends, and hangout all the time. They come up with a plan to get a young boy named Toby who lives across the street from Allison back because when they have their weekly Friday night sleepovers he always spies or plays pranks on them. The plan they came up with wasn't so smart; it was actually EXTREMELY dangerous. They decided to shoot a firework right past Toby's tree house and freak him out. When Ali shot it something in the bushes behind her made a noise and she jumped just as she shot it. The firework went into the tree house and ali darted away before anyone would see her. I'm not going to give away anymore!
I recommend this book to teenage girls who like realistic fiction.

I would totally recommend the book
"The Andes". I read the book summer 07 and it was the bomb! It's about this guy that is planning to go South but then his plane crashes in the Andes Mountains, the coldest point of it. He and the rest have to survive until either help comes or one of them decide to sacrifice their life and go looking for help over the mountains. The book has some pretty gruesome parts and this book isn't for the people who get grossed out easily or people who don't have patience. The ending is really good but I think the plot is even better. The genre of this book is Biography, the guy that this happened to, is writing the book. Overall, I think the book is just plain AMAZING!
The type of people who would like this book would be if they liked POV's and people with patience because the tension builds for a long time and BAM! the book smashes at you with so many good parts.

Stargirl by Jerry spanelli
stargirl is about this girl named stargirl. Stargirl moved to a pubic school she is ‘free spirted’ and is different from all the students. Leo is the narrator, leo and stargirl are dating and in moving away from her he breaks her heart and betrays her. Stargirl was very different to all the other girls because mostly everyday at lunch she would take out he ukelele and sing, and when it was someone’s birthday she would get up and sing to them.
reflection— stargirl was really interesting. I thought it was cool how she changed her name about 5 or 6 times.

The book Pretty Little Liars is actually a very good book. In the beginning it seemed a little boring but once you get into it it's a page turner kind of book. This book is a great realistic fiction book. This book is about a group of friends who always hang out with eachother and then one day one of the girls dissipeared. A couple of years later all of the other girls get harrasing text messages. The girls are very afraid because the person that sent them the texts know all of there secrets! This book really keeps you at the edge of your seat pratically the whole time!

CRASH, by Jerry Spinelli, is about, John, a star football player, who is nicknamed "Crash". John is very popular with his classmates. He is neighbors with a kid that he thinks is a dork. They have nothing in common, but as the book goes on, they become really good friends. The message of this book is that you should treat people like you want to be treated. I think this book would appeal to boys ages 8-14.

I think I would recommend the book called Snake Head By Anthony Horowitz. I want to recommend this book because it was loaded with action and is like a spy type story. This book is in the Alex rider series and is the last book in the series. The story line is about a 14 year old kid named Alex Rider who is a spy for and agency called M16. He is trying to figure out how and who killed his father Ian Rider. I would recommend this book to 12 years of age and higher. This I the best book for action packed lovers.

Twilight by Stephanie Meyer
Stephanie Meyer is a great author that creates amazing stories with realistic and unique characters. I can relate to almost every character in her books. Twilight is about a girl named Bella Swan, and her relationship with a vampire Edward Cullen. Bella is just an average girl that moved from her hometown in Phoenix, Arizona to Forks, Washington to live with her dad. While she’s there she meets Edward, and falls in love with him not knowing that he and the rest of his family are vampires! This book is my all time favorite and I would recommend it to any girl that likes romance, horror, mystery, action, and fantasy. The Twilight series is so amazing, and if you don’t read it you would be missing out on the best series I have ever read.

The Private Novels by Kate Brian are amazing books. They are very well written and keep me on the edge of my seat. They are fiction/mystery and seem very real.

The books have a main character named Reed Brennan. She lived in a small town and she really needed a change; and that’s what she got. When she got a scholarship to Easton Academy, she said yes in a heart beat. Once she arrived she had instant friends. But being herself, she wanted more. When she was spotted by the girls of Billings, (the exclusive dorm where only the prettiest ,smartest and richest girls can live) she was ecstatic. But as she settled in, that when everything started happening. All the drama. All the lies. All the secrets. All the deaths.
Read the Private Novels to experience all this; but its not happening to you.

Shooter
By Walter Dean Myers

This a fantastic book written in a way like a teen would talk. It is a brilliant story it is annoyingly addictive. This book is about three teenage kids who don’t exactly fit in. Two of the friends Cameron and Len have been friends for a few years and are normally good except for one graphite act. They decide to start a small group of three, of course Len and Cameron and a girl Carla. There is a little bit of romance between Len and Carla but they fight and are then just friends. Len has been going a little dark for awhile but they didn’t know how dark in till he told them his plan of writing stop the violence on the schools walls, in his own blood!

The story takes place in and around a school named Madison High. They are all 16 years old and Cameron is extremely smart for his age and Len thinks about joining the army. Cameron and Len are always bullied, but especially by Brad Williams the “super jock.” Len has a lot of anger and loves to shot guns up at a club owned by a group called the patriots.

The author has another book “monster” which is also an excellent book. I recommend his writing to people who can understand how complex the characters thinking’s are.

Getting Air
Dan Gutman

this book is very intense it gives alot of emotion, good or bad. the books storie is alot like the 9/11 storie of the plain that was going to hit the white house. It’s easy to figure out what each character is like from the beginning. The book really never gets to boring it keeps you entertained with cliff hangers’ suspenseful stuff and funny comments. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone that was effected by 9/11 or has a had life

I would recommend the book, Seed Folk to any boy or girl who wants a good quick read. This book is about a not so great town. It has a lot of violence and is much separated. Most of the book is about how such a little thing like a garden can bring such a town together.
It reminds me of my soccer games. I have met people from my town who I would have never met if it wasn’t for soccer.

Book Recommendation
By “Kings of Leon”

The Clique series by Lisi Harrison is a really cool realistic fiction series about a “clique.” In a middle school in Westchester, a girl named Claire Lyons has to move from a “not-so-rich” school to a rich school in Westchester. The leader of the clique (Massie) has to deal with a new girl coming into “her” school and living in her very own guest house! This all happens too fast for Massie Block, but Claire Lyons could not be happier that she eventually fits in with Massie’s clique (Kristen, Alicia, Massie and Dylan.) But as the author says, “the only thing harder than getting in is staying in,” (this quote refers to the clique Massie Block leads.) Anyone who is interested in a dramatic, girly, edge-of- your-seat story then go ahead and start reading!

Nathan Hale

Nathan Hale by M. William Phelps is an amazing biography, the first one about America’s first spy in about 100 years. His education was one of the best. A Yale graduate at only 18, Nathan Hale was said to be one of the best athletes in Yale ever. His first job was a schoolteacher but once the Revolution started he became a commander and eventually became a spy.
I read this book to learn about the Revolutionary War, but anyone who likes spies, history, or colonial times should read this book about one man who helped win our independence.

I recommend the Alex rider series because it builds up a lot of tension and it has you on the edge of your seat till the very end. The series is by an English guy who lives in England his name is Anthony howoritz. He is the New York Times best selling author. The main character is Alex rider who lives in England and has no parents or aunts or uncle. His best friend is jack starbright. Alex rider gets pulled out of school by ml6. The ml6 get rid of terrorist organizations. Alex is sent to be a spy. I recommend this book to boys.

There are bullies, geeks, cool kids, a mystery kid who runs barefoot and Roy who is the kid who is telling the story .He has a mom and dad. His dad works for the department of Justice, and his mom is a stay at home mom. The bully is Dana Matheson he pickets on Roy that is why I cannot tell you the rest you will have to read the book. “Clique”
I would recommend the book Clique by Lisi Harrison to any one who loves drama and realistic fiction. There are problems that everyone has or will face through life. For example one of the main characters Claire moved from Florida where life for her was middle class just too then be transferred to a high class of wealthy people. Trying to fit in wasn’t the easiest thing for her but her odyssey though the book made her confidence skyrocket. Clique can relate to any middle school students life (mainly a girls but boys relate too.)

Stormbreaker
By Anthony Horowitz

Stormbreaker is a great book with amazing writing and fantastic plot twists. Stormbreaker is about a regular 14-year-old schoolboy, Alex, who gets blackmailed into working for MI6. It is a fast paced action, adventure spy story. It is very much like James Bond. If you like action and adventure this is the perfect book for you. It is very fun but a bit unrealistic. The whole plot felt kind of fake. Overall it is a great book and I think almost anyone would like it.

The Lost Boy by Dave Pelzer was a non – fiction story. It was about Dave Pelzer's struggling with his ability to fit in and adapt to the new environment around him as he is put into foster care. It also talks about the kindness of his foster parents and other people around him. I would recommend this book is interested in sad stories about kids who’s parents miss treat the and don’t care about them, basically a story about a foster child. but overall its an excellent book and i think anyone would enjoy it.

The book I would recommend would be the outsiders. This book is about to gangs that have hatred towards each other. There is a lot of violence in this book. All of the violence turns out to be extreme in the end but they work it out in the end. The genre is realistic fiction. The setting is mainly in a town with lots of gang hangout places. I think someone who likes realistic fiction with some action it would like this book.

"Gossip Girl"
By Cecily von Ziegesar

I really love this book! Its about a mysterious gossip blogger who only goes by Gossip Girl. She writes about the lives of Manhattan's upper east side elite group. She mostly writes about Serena van der Woodsen, who came back from a mysterious dissapearance the year before. Blair Waldorf, Serena's best friend, is not happy at all about Serena's return because her boyfriend Nate Archibald liked Serena before getting together with Blair and now Blair thinks that with Serena back, she will steal Nate away and she will not allow for that to happen. I would reccomend this book for anyone who likes "pretty little liars", "the clique" and "the a-list" because its a great book where love, friendship and betrayal are all on spectacular display.

The Princess Diaries
By Meg Cabot
The book I read in the past three months that I enjoyed is called The Princess Diaries, by Meg Cabot. This book is about a pretty average girl (with the exception of her large feet and height) who lives in Greenwich Village, Manhattan and has been having some troubles in school and out of school. Then one day her father comes to America from where he lives in a small country in Europe called Genovia. And he tells her what any girl, except her, could dream of. She’s a princess. I think you would like this book if you like realistic fiction books or books that are written in a journal form. I personally usually do not like journals but this is an exception. Even if you do not like journal books you will like this book because of the detail the author puts into it. I would also highly suggest that boys do NOT read this book because of some details that might be unpleasant.

The book I recommend is “MIDNIGHTERS” by Scott Westerfield. This book is about a bunch of kids who were born at midnight. At midnight the world freezes for an hour and everything stops, even time. Those born at midnight are granted special abilities that help them survive the creatures that dwell within that hour. I would recommend this book to fantasy readers because it has a lot of magic in it and it keeps you on the edge of your seat.

He also has to try to warn to people that he has crashed and where he is by smoke trailes. I recommend this book to people who like a little adventure.

A book I would definitely recommend, is “The Penderwicks on Gardam Street” By Jeanne Birsall this book is a sequel to “The Penderwicks.” It’s a really good book, about a family of three sisters, a dad and a dog. This family has lost a beloved Mom, and the sisters feel that no one can ever replace her… One day, the Aunt of the Penderwicks comes for a visit, and she expresses that she wants her brother (Mr.Penderwick) to go on dates, and then eventually maybe get married. A new single mother moves in next to the Penderwicks, and all of the sisters feel that there Dad should take her out on a date. The book is about how the sisters try and get them together. It is a great book, with a lot of suspense, and many opportunities for foreshadowing. If you like realistic-fiction books, that will make you laugh, smile, cry and all sorts of emotion… read this book!
(and the 1st one… (“The Penderwicks”)

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton was a great book. It is about two gangs in a bad part of Oklahoma that have to learn to deal with each other. One night, when something drastic happens, it changes the way the two gangs look at each other. The reason why I like this book so much is that it is about a kid who has to deal with a drastic change in his life. I would recommend this book to people who like books that are unpredictable, like realistic fiction and people who have had a change in their life and they don’t know how to deal with it.

Recently in school this year, I read the book “Shakespeare’s Secret” written by Elise Broach. It was about a girl named Hero who never fits in with the kids at her schools. But this time she moves into a house that is supposed to have a hidden diamond that’s worth a million dollars and may uncover who the true Shakespeare is. With the help of a friendly neighbor and a popular boy they try to find the diamond, and reveal the true Shakespeare.
If you're like me and enjoy reading realistic fiction or mystery, this book is for you. "Shakespeare's Secret" is a great book, not only because of the book itself, but because all of the people that they talk about in the book are true people. Like Anne Boleyn, The Earl of Oxford, Elizabeth I, and more.

I would recommend “The Absolute True Diary of a Part/Time Indian”.
A teenage Indian boy named Arnold moves to a white school, and his best friend gets mad at him. His sister goes missing, his sister is dies, and he makes up with his friend from the reservation school.
It is a comic novel by Sherman Alexie. It takes place on an Indian reservation. In the beginning he talks abut how he was born differently than other kids. I think that teens should read this book because it talks about maturing and what its like to be poor.

Her television show is on a break and she wants to be normal and take a brake from paparazzi and work. So she decides to go to school with her not famous friend disguised as a girl from England. Everything is fine until her enemy co-star finds out.
If you like realistic fiction and drama you will like this book.

The Taker
By J.M. Steele
By Milky Milk

I would recommend “The Taker” by J.M. Steele, because it’s a really cool book. It’s about this girl named Carly Beils and the stress about the SAT, a high school exam. Carly gets tutored by a boy named Ronald Gross (it rhymes with floss), but before that she gets a strange text message from apparently the “Taker” to get higher points on the SAT, since she gets writing-710, critical reading-510, & math-490, all together1710. What a horrible score for someone who wants to get into Princeton. Her boyfriend Brad and her friends, Molly & Jen help her get through it, even though there are some fights throughout the story. In this book there are also “helpful” “Survival Tips” at the end of almost every chapter. I would recommend this book to students who like Realistic Fiction/Novels.

I read the book Shakespeare's Secret, which is a really good history mystery. It is a realistic book that you can relate to your life. It mostly takes place in a middle school, a girl named Hero's house and a lady named Miriam (Mrs. Roth's) house. The beginning of the book is about how Hero is trying to fit into her new school. Then, Mrs. Roth tells Hero that she is living in the Murphy Diamond House (there is a possibility that there is a diamond hidden inside). The rest of the book is about Hero and her friend Danny looking for the diamond. I would suggest this book to people who like mystery books. Also, people who like a book to stay on the same topic for most of the time. Even though the book stays on the same topic there are little surprising moments that you wouldn't expect to be there and they make you want to read more.

Book Recommendation

I would recommend the book The Melting of Maggie Bean. The book is about a fat girl who is in love with chocolate. She wants to try out for this swim team, but the other kids make fun of her when she practices, so she practices in private. In the end she doesn’t make the swim team, but is given the option to join a different swim team. The genre of this book is realistic fiction, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes grabbing stories and chocolate.

Book: Shooter
Genre: Auto-Bio
Author: Jack Coughlin

Shooter is an auto biography about a top ranked gunnery sergeant marine sniper, Jack Coughlin.
He talks about his time in Somalia, The Middle East, and even his private life in the U.S.

He also likes to explain the violent death of his victims. It's sort of funny that he has no sympathy.

I recommend this book to really anyone, but be aware that it can get graphic.

It is about a ten year old girl on a journey to rescue her 6th grade english teacher. the only only teacher in her school that isn’t old naggy or mean. She is only doing this because he is so near and dear to her and is the only thing she has left especially after her uncle died. One of my favorite books that I would recommend to anyone is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. The book is a fantasy book, if someone is interested in non-fiction then I would not recommend the book. The setting of the story takes place in a small town, where a poor boy lives. The boy wins a ticket to tour a magical chocolate factory. The owner of the factory is looking for a child with a good heart and the right morals to take over running everything. To do this, he selects 5 children to test their character to see who will one day own the factory. The main character is nice and in the end is rewarded for his beliefs to behave and to do what is right. I enjoyed this book and I think many other people would to.

The All American Girl by Meg Cabot was such a great book I finished it in a day! This book is about a girl named Samantha (Sam) Madison who is an outcast with only one friend, Catherine. After Sam’s parents find out that she has been drawing celebrity caricatures instead of doing her German homework, they force her to take art classes at the Susan Boone Studio. Sam decides to skip the second art class at the studio and wander around. When she sees the president’s motorcade stop by, she notices the president walk into a cookie store. Among the Hidden PURPLEMONKEY

Among the Hidden is a great science fiction book that is not too far fetched. It takes place in the future when famine sweeps our country of food; laws are then passed that each family cannot have more than two children. With only two children per family, the population would drop, there fore having fewer mouths to feed. Population police have door-to-door searches to reinforce the law. If any thirds were found they would be killed. The leader that is in control of this issue is a dictator with harsh punishments. Luke Granner is an illegal third, he cannot go to school, go into town, or even go outside for if he is found he would face death. He stares longingly outside at the shining sun wishing he could one day be free. Now and again Luke sneaks outside and savors the sun’s rays. One day he wondered too far when he stumbled upon Jen, a fellow third child. Luke and Jen start having secret meetings that require them to risk being seen as they commute back and forth houses. Luke then finds out Jen is in a secret third child chat room. She’s sure that the government has no idea that the site exists. One day Jen and her online buddies organize a protest right outside the government’s office. Luke, being persuaded by Jen to participate in the protest falls back at the last minuet. The book is full of twists and turns and is you examine close enough, is almost based off of real historic events (Tan mine square China). It leaves you at the edge of your seat for the entire book. Once you read the book from cover to cover it would leave you baffled, satisfied, and hungry for more.

Shooter, by Dean Myers is about a High School shooting that left one kid dead by a self inflicted wound. The story is wrapped around the Police interviews with witnesses and also friends of the deceased. In the book it shows newspaper articles relating to the Shooting and also police evidence in the case. This Realistic Fiction book would be good for people who like books with ‘Edge-Of-Your-Seat’ information. You never know what will happen next. If people like that I would defiantly recommend this book also, anybody who likes getting to know different characters would be very interested in this book.

Extras by Scott Westerfeld. Extras is the forth book in the trilogy Uglys. The ugly trilogy takes place 300 years in the future. Extras is about a 15 year old girl named Aya. Aya is an ugly and she wants to be famous. But for her to become famous she has to kick a story. A really good story (a kicker is like a journalist). The story that Aya kicks just might get her, her big brother and her friends into a lot of trouble. The genre is teen fiction. The setting 300years in the future.

The maze of bones
by Rick Riordan

If anyone here likes fantasy, adventure, deception, and anything like that, they should read this book.

The book is about two orphans, Amy and Dan Cahill, who have had lots of bad luck so far. Their parents died when they were extremely young, and since, they have been living with their aunt Beatrice, who really doesn't care about them. In the beginning, Grace Cahill, the last knowledgeable member of the extremely powerful Cahill family dies. But, in the last moments of her life, she changed her will. The Cahill family, by the way, is the most powerful family in history. Most of the famous figures of history are related to the family. But the source of the family's power has been lost. Grace, the last one who knew it, had scattered it around the world in the form of 39 clues. Read it to find out the rest.

The Market
By J.M. Steele

I would recommend “The Market” by J.M. Steele. The Market is about a high school girl named Kate Winthrop. At school Kate finds a note in her locker saying that she is invited to a party at Gretchen’s house(the queen of the school), but Kate doesn’t know it was a joke and her two friends Dev and Callie insist that she goes. After the party one night at home Kate gets an IM leading her to a website called the Millbank Social Stock Market. It has the rankings of popularity of all 141 senior girls at Millbank High. Kate finds out that she is ranked number 71. In order to enter the market and get a better ranking, you have to put in $500.  At the end of the school year, the person with the largest portfolio, wins the pot which would be about $25,000. Dev and Callie begin making a plan to get Kate number 1 in the stock market. In this book it talks about how the girls act and treat each other. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read Realistic Fiction/Novels.

The Last Summer, By Hailey Abbott is a book I’d definitely recommend to girls, from ages 12-17. This book is about 4 cousins; Ella Tuttle, Kelsi Tuttle, Beth Tuttle, and Jamie Tuttle, and this summer Kelsi brought along a friend, Taryn. The setting is a summer in Maine. In this book there is a lot of drama. Mostly about guys. Their exes, old friends, pasts, future boyfriends, and of course making memories. This is the last book, yet the most intense. I think the type of people who would like these series, are girls who are into romance.

Fly Away Home

Fly away home by Eve Bunting was a very thrilling and moving piece. It was sad how people just like you and me have no home or any place to go so they go into an airport to live. If I was Andrew it would be hard for me because at the end of the day you would not have a place to go home and sleep in a bed or even take a nice hot shower.

In conclusion fly away home was a very sad story. I was kind of surprisesed in the beginning of the story because that’s when I found out that they were living in an airport. It must be hard really having no friends to play with. He can’t even be a kid and run around because if he did him and his dad would be thrown out of the airport.
